A 78-year-old Melbourne man caught speeding at 170km/h on a winding road has become the oldest person to have his car impounded under Victoria's hoon laws.

The man was driving the Nissan Pulsar at 170km/h in a 100km/h zone in Brandy Creek Road, Warragul, east of Melbourne on January 1 when he was caught by police.

He was following a Nissan Skyline driven by a 36-year-old man.

Acting Sergeant Carlo Visser said the road was six metres wide and winding.

"It is disappointing to see a senior member of our community being so irresponsible - what example does this set for younger drivers?" he said.

"The man expressed to us that he believed he was a skilled driver, and that he races cars.

"But we fail to see how a driver can be competent when they are tearing around roads at 170km/h knowing that other drivers will not be expecting you.

"To put those people's safety - and your own - at such risk is really just toying with death," Act Sgt Visser said.

Both men had their cars impounded and paid $600 to retrieve their vehicles from the Warragul impoundment on Monday.

The 78-year-old from Narre Warren North and the 36-year-old Canterbury man will both appear before court where they face fines and licence suspensions.

Previously, the oldest driver to have their car impounded for speeding was a 64-year-old Melbourne man who drove a Porsche at 110km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Police have already impounded 42 vehicles in just six days from Victorian drivers.

I'm sorry but a 78 year old who can drive at 170 on a winding road and has obviously done so for a number of year and likely in some pretty ill handling old cars and is still here to talk about it.

Thats not a hoon that is a skilled driver!!!

This world needs to grow the F&^K up. People need to learn there limitations, take responsibility if you cant stick to them and if you step over them and hurt someone you get absolutely raped for it.

This guy is driving within his limitations ( or he would have been dead years ago ). GTF over it.

Sadly this is Australia so it will never happen.

I don't agree here you say being old is an excuse to drive fast as he has experience? Sorry but I am not a fan of the older generation looking down on us youngens and thinking they can do what they please and get away with it.

If he was so experienced and skilled he would be old and wise enough to know the LAW and the LAW states that drive over X speed and it classed as dangerous driving. It does not state if you are over 55 you will get off, laws are there to be followed and if you do the crime you do the time. You think the old guy being so wise and all would know this and also know that this is kept for the track.

I am not saying I am perfect either (I am far from it), and I am not defending myself here either but I don't have the wool over my eyes and I know the reality of what I do and what consequences there are behind my actions.

As opposed to a 20 year old police driver in an unmarked car? Because they have "special training"

I had one (unmarked cop car) do a U turn in front of me (slight tyre smoke) on Bannister road and sped off at prob close to 120 km/h. I caught up to them at the Nicholson Rd lights and they seemed to be in no hurry by then. How is this less dangerous?

Believe me, being a "reasonably" experienced driver does not give you a free pass.
At best, holding a CAMS lic. etc. still got me 6 months off the road, but may have helped reduced the fine.

Hes probably been doing it for 50 years more than us, doesnt make him more responsable, imo it just makes him more dangerous, thinking hes too experienced to crash..
Isn't it true that it's more likely for a race car driver to crash on the streets than a normal person because theyre over-confident and are use to racing other prof. drivers, not youre everyday un-predictable driver?
