Default Career change maybe

Hey all, im 23 and currently working in a store on a 38500 salary. I know it's not bad, but I know I cant live on that when im older.
Ive been looking around and was wondering how hard it would be to get a mature age apprenticeship?
I have a current HR licence, forklift ticket, but thats about it. Id like to get into the work fields that WA currently have shortages for, like an electricion or heavy mechanic, etc.
If anyone has any suggestions or opportunities, would be much appreciated.

Given that most people are getting the sack everywhere, might be harder to start off than a year or so ago.

Speak to ppl like American Dave who are in the recruiting game.

Have you considered the alternative; Ie. a uni degree/tafe qualification as opposed to hands-on/apprenticeship type work?

Or become a funeral director. You're guaranteed work

Ive thought about going back to tafe / uni, but I could only really consider night shifts as I couldn't live on crap all if I left my job.

Better than living on "crap all" now than for the rest of your life.

Keep your job and study nights at Curtin - took me 5.5 years but well worth it.

Ive also been told by someone I work with about pay rates at places such as the fremantle ports and such, but as far as I know, decent paying jobs like that are 'who you know' positions.

When I say 'crap all' I mean, if im not making enough money, I would have to sell my car losing $10k, and live on almost nothing, which I couldn't do.

If you're really looking for a change, you could get your qualifications through the Armed Forces. Pay is not too bad, and they are still hiring.

I considered it when I was younger, but was ineligible (various reasons).

LOL, my gf is in 2nd year Nursing.. Not quite enough =(

Id rather not move away for work, so I doubt government forces would be suitable work for me.
