Certainly did - had a 318is with like 116km on the clock. BEAUTIFUL car to drive, very well built and chassis was awesome. Mine had leather/sunroof and a few other extras.

All the awesomeness aside.. the 4cyl sucks total balls. It is totally and utterly lacking in power. I went from my bugeye wrx into that and nearly died. Lasted about 4 months before i got bored and sold it after the novelty wore off.

Still a splendid car to drive.. though i would HIGHLY recommend getting any of the 6 cyls (325/328!).

I have also owned a GTi-R (until not that long ago).

I fully serviced both the BMW and the GTiR. Parts were not that different at all. For the gtir get used to hearing (we dont do imports) however. A clutch change on that cost me 2k also. Beemer was straight forward for parts and fairly affordable, nothing outrageous (just avoid auto classic).

I will suggest you to look into Liberty if you want something bigger. BMW's are great cars but I don't think it is for us, unless you are talking M3 level.

stay away from the gtir, terrible to work on, gearbox is unique to that car & very hard to get hold of if you have any drama's with it, have you thought about a gsr lancer? could be a goer?

I don't know why people bag the 318i so much. I've driven and owned numerous "better" cars, and if all I was doing is driving around town, I'd pick the 318i over any of them, in fact even with the choice of the Evo I still pick the 318i more often than you would think (maybe I'm getting old )

The quality of BMW's (can't comment on E36, only E46 and E90) are an absolute standout.

While parts might not be THAT expensive, BMW specialists seem to charge a lot when it comes to labour.

^^ I thought my response was balanced? I like BMW products in general, just the 318i has about as much driving pleasure as a Camry. I've also driven a 320 with a SR20DET, that was a good (if a little hairy) compromise. A friend of mine in the UK has done several 4.4 and 5.0 BMW V8 conversions in everything from E30-M3 & E36 318i to a Jeep Cherokee!
