Bankrupcy is probably the best thing for them right now.
It gives them a way out of the crippling agreements they have in america where the fund the pensions and health care of thousands of ex workers, and they can also shed unwanted assets and restructure debt.

Who else is in Australia affected in this way?
Ford - they havnt taken any money from the u.s goverment yet - they say they are ok. Chrysler - who cares - means a few less posers driving shitter 300c's - probably good for GC8 owners around these traps anyhow. The Jap car makers for the moment are ok - as are the Euro's

The big three going in down will mean trouble for the parts manufactures and mass job losses. It will also mean that Honda, Toyota and Subaru plants in the USA will have to pay higher prices for some of their parts that are made in the USA for those cars.
The retired auto workers will cop it horribly but it might just be the answer to America's health care issues because I believe the government will be forced into providing health care to all as a result. Pity they didn't pump those billions of rescue dollars into health cover, hospitals and pensions as it might have made a bigger difference to all Americans.

Also means that Honda etc in America will have an increased market, and thus require more parts, which could drive down the cost of what they buy atm...
The health care thing might be the biggest plus though.

many say if one us car maker goes at least one other will follow as suppliers that supply more than one fold and the remaining car makers struggle for supply.
Others say it could be the trigger for a depression in the US. Such is the large scale workforces of the car industry in the US. Hopefully they just start peeling assets and brands change ownership without wholesale loss of jobs. |

As someone said above it is not just GMH going broke. It is all the associated industries. i.e. Bridgestone would have to lay off x number of workers etc.
A mate just bought a new navara and apparently nissan stopped production of navaras for three months due to over supply and that sent their seat supplier bankrupt. Expect the next shipment of navaras to have different seats in them! Brendon

Honda stopped production of all their cars for 3 months to...In fact there have been a lot of manufacturers slowing down or ceasing production for what are quite substantial periods when you consider that a new car only takes a few hours to build.
Dont expect to see any niche models or new sportscars for a long time! |
