yep thats what i thought. the goal is eventually to be in the admin side and get out of the support desk crap haha. basically finding the right uni course that will give me this option and provide good options for employment at the end.

a degree in IT (any stream) will do that for you (if it were me, i'd pick the easiest, or the one that will let you use the most exemptions).

or, be good at what you do- it will eventually fall your way if your persistent and good at it

I managed to walk into a 65k IT job off the street a few years ago. Regardless of what area of IT you want to work in, i highly recommend completing the ITIL V3 Foundations course as this is pretty much an industry standard now.

i dont expect to walk into a 65k job say now or when i finish my degree, would be awesome but i just want to get myself set for the future. i would presume its easier doing all the study now then coming back after a few years and doing it.

Yes and no .. you'll find that

a) you never stop learning
b) when you end up getting a job, if you have a good employer you will get sent on all expenses paid training courses.

I didn't goto Uni .. in the IT industry to some extent it's not what you know but who you know.

As rich said it is still is a case of who you know rather than what you know, that said there's still a few jobs around which you can get with the right mix of experience and qualifications.

At the moment theres not much around, and the ones available have hundreds of people going for them so you have to stand out in some way.

As Tuna said, tafe gives you a lot of hands on, so you get more experience with the equipments etc. However to get into an upper level sys admin role you need to documentation and management experience to go with it. Some you can pickup on the job, but things like righting up business cases and budgets your better off learning at uni.
