Do what employers do and give them a general range of what you would expect the salary to be, eg:$45k-$60k, depending on what other perks, benefits are available. Also confirm if you are talking about salary only, or a salary package which includes everything eg:super, allowances, bonuses etc.

Better to say over their limit in my books, they will still then tell you the most they are willing to pay you IMHO. I told them what i was on at the current place i was at and just said i wanted more then what i was getting really, had another job offer at the same time and also told them that, they offered more again, i was happy with it so just took it, i guess you can never really know if you could of gotten more out of them, or if you got more out of them then what they originally would of offered.

Interview has already been done last week so what's been said has been said. I've already got a stable job, so I suppose it doesn't really hurt to ask for a bit more as long as I keep it reasonable. We'll see how it goes! =)

Personally, I'd be expecting the company to offer me a figure first, then you can negotiate from that point onwards if needed. Remembering that they could then just take the offer away if you are too greedy.

Its all a catch 22 really. If you say you want too little, people wonder why. If you say you want too much, people will discount you from the job. So better imo to get them to come forward first.

Its a difficult one. We had a guy that had been working for us for over 10 years and he is based in Kwinana and the only time we see him is at the Xmas party. Absolutely awesome employee that never causes any dramas and never rings up and says I need more money etc. Then you have the guys that are in your office every 3 minutes saying I need more money or I am leaving. Up until 12 months ago you absolutely had to pay it. The point I am getting at is that these guys that are in your face got the pay rises and the excellent guy almost got forgotten about because he never said boo. However....he still has a job and these other knob jockeys that held me to ransom are now working somewhere else for far less money than I was paying them.

As an employer you know what is reasonable and what other people in the indsutry is paying. I think you did the right thing telling the truth. For all you know the guys son might play footy with your current bosses son and perth is too small to start telling lies. Would definately have got away with it 12 months ago but if you are genuinely interested in moving jobs I would be up front. Nothing shits me more than when people come in an say john said I would be earning this. The guy I work with earns this. Why is it different.

listen kids, wat u earn is your business, not a potential new employer, never tell a new employer wat u earn, add a factor that is not over the top because once u start the new job the negoations have ceased unless its contained in a contract, but highly unlikely, best can expect in future increases is CPI...so sought it out up front, keeping in mind theres plenty of poeple out there lookin for work, so can only ask wat the current market is offerring...........
