hook turns make perfect sense. it's so you're not in the tram's way when it's coming through. it's also good as it allows two lanes of through traffic, whereas sitting in the middle of the inside road blocks up one lane and cars have to move to the outer.

what I like is that you can turn left on a red light at an intersection (allowed in USA - obviously it's a right turn there). you only have to give way in one direction, so it's pretty easy.

Other than possibly getting rear ended by a car that isn't expecting you to slow down for the U turn more than a right turn, what's the problem? It's legal in most other states.
If I could U turn at just one set of lights I could get to work a minute earlier!

Because on some intersections, there will be a green arrow for traffic to be turning left, meaning that you will be doing a U-Turn directly into traffic that has a green arrow to turn left.

Example intersection: Albany Hwy and Nicholson Road - Seen it happen before. Someone doing a U-Turn to head back towards Carousel and then suddenly realised a shitload of traffic has green arrow to be turning left and then they are pinned down and have to wait for that to stop.

hook turns makes sense, but as usual victoria lead the way on road rules and regulations.

usually at our inconvenience, but they freely admit road revenue raising and have a fairly low tolerence to hoons.

i think its great all the taxi's are one colour too. unlike perth.

yes agreed, the whole world operates just fine with this rule..right on red after a stop in the USA, left on red after a stop in Victoria. Improves traffic flow significantly too. Too much common sense for us common folk in WA to use.

WA state government and Rob "the joke" Johnson have NO interest in improving traffic flow on our roads, with exception of the flow of revenue.

U-Turns at traffic lights become extremely dangerous when traffic coming from the side road has a green filter arrow light.

They are given a green light to go (and 99% will turn without looking if there is any traffic, as traffic in the other direction should be stopped by a red light). Suddenly someone doing a u-turn is merging into traffic with a green light and all hell breaks loose.

The rule is there to protect the piss poor road design we have.
