Bluray Ripping Software
Can anybody recommend a good bluray ripper?
I'm looking for one similar to DVD shrink - where it is small, simple GUI, but can edit menus, compression etc And also doesn't install 50 billion toolbars and other shit I don't need. Thanks |

Update - DVDfab seems to do the trick, although the lay out is a bit gay. (using version 7.0.9.2).

Hey bud, setting your standards a little low if you're wanting something comparable to dvdshrink. I will ask a few mates and see what they are using, but it wont be any form of one click program that compresses the crap out of the video files.

Cheers marc.
What I liked about DVD shrink was the simplicity and small file size of the program, but seeing as they stopped supporting it in 2005 it did struggle with more modern DVD encryption. I refuse to use enormous, expensive, resource hogging programs, when there is plenty of free software that will do the same job (if not better). |

Try this for ripping and let me know http://www.imgburn.com/ this project essentially took off from where dvddecrypter finished.

Hey Bud, just throwing this out there for now, will come back and edit it later.
This depends on what you hope to accomplish. ie rip to drive and encode to mkv or you want to keep it as blu-ray compatible. Either way, you'll need slysoft AnyDVD HD. #1 I'd first check how you would like converting blu-ray to smaller size. bd25 discs take forever to burn, cost a pretty penny, etc. jdobbs has bd rebuilder beta testing going on. I'd take a gander and read here: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=143716 . blu-ray to dvd9-->keeping menu's and 1 audio, the video will still be superb. I've heard nothing but good things (although if you don't have an i7, it'll take a little longer to encode. ie give it a day or half a day. If you want to know how to encode, let me know as I'll step it out for you, 'note the time frames if you don't have very current hardware' 'for example starting with a CPU that's worth roughly 2k'. To late for me to even bother writing this in any form of plausible english, but start with sourcing a copy of slysoft Anydvd HD.

Holy shit, a day to encode!
It's running on an i5 661, with 4gb ddr3, which is by no means slow, but seems like I might be a bit under powered. Encoding is really what I'm looking for. I've seen a few mkv files that seem to average between 3 to 4 gb for a 2 hour movie. The quailty of those is superb. Unless there is a direct comparison with the original disc, I can't even tell it's a rip. I appreciate the help, I'll have a peek at that forum. I've managed to source a virus free version of anydvd HD, but haven't had a crack at it yet. I'm pretty good at figuring this sort of stuff out, just need to be pointed in the right direction. Encoding hammers your system resources regardless of format type, BRD is just extra greedy.
More encoding info to come. Also remember, when looking at already encoded mkvs' the smaller size is mostly attributed to directors commentary being stripped 'this will almost split initial file size in half', removal of all other typical BRD features 'camera angles etc', removal of all extras, unneeded subtitles 'very minimal file size attributed here'. Am I right in assuming that the mkvs' you're referring to have been down sampled to 720p? Not that this really makes a difference 'some say they can tell the difference, but I call bs unless its a shitty encode', as 1080p's, dependant on cropping/frame rate and audio source/biterate chosen will vary between 5 - 17gb 'obviously the 17gb would relate to long movies such as 'Dances with Wolves etc', averaging out at around 8-9gb.
