Mountain Bikes
I'm sure a few people are into this on here...
I want to get a pushie that will mostly be used for gravel roads, bitumen roads and sometimes trails. I don't see the need for full suspension, however front suspension would be nice. Was looking to spend between 500 and 700 I spose.... what are some good brands/sizes etc/features I should look for? I found a Giant STP-2 05 model for sale for 600$ second hand, looks pretty pro but dunno about hitting longer trails on it, looks more for tricks n stuff?

Giant Yukon, got a 25" frame, picked it up for $550 with gloves, lights and tarmac tyres. I did the search for a pushie about 18months ago, best bang for buck.

Weird! I'm also looking for a bike. The never ending struggle to get in shape! I had a Giant when I was younger and it was an awesome bike so I am definately going to go this route again. Cheers for the info jme.

What Jme said. Giant continually seem to offer some of the best buck throughout their range with generally higher levels of componetry at similar price points or same level of components but cheaper.
In the price range you are looking in, front suspension only would be the go. Maybe a P-WRX single track bush blast is on the cards??? Or a suburban MTB pub crawl.... |

I used to manage a MTB shop back in NZ(PennyFarthing Cycles Wellington. Lots of fun-I own a GT DH/jump bike. We used to sell Giant, GT, Scott, Trek. I chose GT as a bike cos they're bomb proof and i crash alot while DH racing(plus i had good sponsorship).
But i always suggest Giant-cos of "bang for buck" value. You just cant beat them for a good reliable street cruiser with moderate off road usage. Yeh definatly a yukon or similar-just make sure you deal with someone who is confident about the "fit" of the bike cos ive seen HEAPS of knee related injuries due bikes being too small or to large. Hope this helps-any more questions and i dont mind helping out.

Yup Giant is great value....have road and mountain versions. Yukon great value....disc brakes front and rear if I recall but I'm sure they're mechanical and not Hydraulic.
Great entry level bike though. Think the 06 model is rrp $749. Depending on how much riding you want to do would be a good bike.....although I rode a Giant Reign in Utah last year and man......NICE!! http://www.giant-bicycles.com/us/030...06&model=11272

Yeah atz I'm in the same boat. I used to ride a Giant atx 870 (????) with front sus back in Tassie a few years ago. Great bikes and I gave it hell. Looking to buy a new (or good second-hand) bike in the next few weeks. The latest full suspesion bikes are filth tho! No bob on climb, some even have full rear lockout and disc brakes are excellent these days.
Bugeye Sti, what is the best frame size for a 183cm 83kg bloke for tarmac and weekend cross country/single train duties???? Good bike shops around town?? What's a good model for about $1200??? I know MTBreview.com is a great site for comparisons, just after your opinion. |
