the ones i kept were only 26 and 27cm. flathead are a very nice eating fish.

Rossco 07-03-2011 02:10 PM

I'd eat flatties from no further up stream than freshwater bay....Plus there's loads of them down there!

Okibi 07-03-2011 06:52 PM

Spent the day on a Mills Deep Water charter, loads of people chucked their guts up (myself included at one point), a couple of nice fish but most went home empty handed.

mARC 07-03-2011 07:02 PM
Anything over say ~32cm tastes like shit anyhow. Flathead are a far better eating fish imo.
Had a good few hours fishing this morning, now off to night shift... sigh

Feel free to explain as opposed to just saying *brrrrrp WRONG*
Opinion and personal experience isn't wrong. It may be different to your experiences however.

Before switching to catch and release fishing, I spent the best part of 10 years eating what I caught. In my experience, 25-30cm Bream tasted far better than say a 35cm Bream. The bigger fish were bland. Keep in mind that most of these fish were caught upstream of East Perth. Older Bream from deeper water, more structure and an abundance of mussels as opposed to Bream that feed on flats could arguably make them taste "better".

I still stand by flathead being nicer to eat. My taste-buds, not yours!

Unsure what you've tried before, but if you haven't had the chance to taste any of the following I'd give them a go:

- Westralian Jewfish;
- Baldchin Gropper; and
- Pink Snapper.

(from memory I think most if not all of the above would be undersize at 30cm)

I thoroughly recommend that you at least try Westralian Jewfish from the ones I've posted above.

I do agree with you that size can effect the taste of a fish. This is very typical in Samson Fish and shark, but bring on the oversize Jewfish any day of the week :D

gorotsuki69 07-03-2011 09:58 PM

going down to Dunsborough next weekend. any news of salmon?

He's only talking about Estuary Black Bream Mark....

P.s I'd go either same day caught & Cooked Spanish Mackerel or fresh Yellow fin Sashimi'd on the spot over any of those you mentioned...

As Rossco pointed out, I was only talking about Black Bream in relation to size vs taste :p

I regularly eat:
Whiting
Dhufish
Pink Snapper
Barra

Went to Wagoe Beach (20km's south of Kalbarri) last week for 4 days. Only got one good night of fishing in the entire time as the wind/weather was horrible! pretty much 30 knot southerly winds the entire time

On the saturday night we did alright and kept a few Tailor to take happy snaps with and eat for lunch the following day. the majority we threw back (probably about 20 or so thrown back).

Below was my best effort for the night, just shy of 70cm and also a pic of our esky full

Super keen to back up there and hopefully get some good easterleys so we can actually do some ballooning for tuna and mackies!

REXXXED 14-03-2011 05:06 PM

Oh and i have 2 and a half weeks off leading up to Easter/Anzac day and can't wait to go Salmon hunting down Hamelin Bay way!

Was literally booked to go last week also. Our group cancelled last minute due to the winds! We were hoping to balloon fish for mackie's but saw the forecast for southerly's and decided to pull out!

Awesome tailor but!

I wish we re-scheduled too hey!
Good Tailor yes, but seriously i didnt drive all that way and spend all this money to catch Tailor.....

What made it worse is we could see the mackie's smashing bait schools only a couple hundred metres off shore, but couldnt get the balloons out due to crappy wind!

All in all a tad dissapointing and im hoping my Salmon trips are more rewarding *fingers crossed*

Looks like a great day out was had.

Kayak Fishing Fun!

1 Attachment(s)
Out at Hillarys this morning on the kayak. The Pinky on the right is just sized (50 on the dot), the one on the left was about 46 -47 and got thrown back. The photo was taken just after i caught the smaller one just so i could get a pic with both :)

Absolutely awesome fun to catch off the kayak with light(ish) gear! They peeled some serious line off on the initial run! Caught both fish in 2 consecutive casts.

Ate the one i kept for dinner tonight, man it was tasty!

TROLLEY 27-03-2011 10:48 PM

Fuck yeh, awesome catch. Did you have jealous onlookers?

REXXXED 27-03-2011 10:52 PM

Yeah some like 8 year old kid and his old man, not to mention my cousin Rob, he was devo he didn't get a run!

pmh 27-03-2011 11:12 PM

how big is your kayak?
looks like you got a bit of gear on it from the pic!

REXXXED 27-03-2011 11:18 PM

Yeah quite a bit of gear on there, however not the biggest yak in the world:

Bgwrx 30-03-2011 07:15 AM

i was told you had to skin a mulloway as soon as you land it otherwise it tastes like shit. has anyone heard this?
i was told you had to skin a mulloway as soon as you land it otherwise it tastes like shit. has anyone heard this?
Nope, have caught many a mulloway and never had this issue.

Cut the throat and bleed it out - shark on the other had is a bit different.

coon84 30-03-2011 08:56 AM

raw fish taste good

I didnt bleed it, some guy told me to just gut the fish n try it raw first. It actually taste better raw than cooked. Once the flesh is cook, it goes a bit chewy IMO.

Caught it in the swan river, dont know how much it weights but the head alone was over 3kgs and it was like 1.4-1.5m long

Bgwrx 02-04-2011 05:31 AM

Went chasing mullaway, tailor and bullsharks tonight from the shore, no luck in that department but managed to land 5 25-27cm bream and 4 28-30cm bream. That made up for the lack of bigger fish. Followed my few golden rules with bream that work a treat! Looking forward to lunch tomorrow:)

Never fished Geraldton, sorry mate. Heard there is big skippy and you get good tailor up there. Just do the usual and fish from rockwalls and that Marina up there looks pretty enticing. Jump on google maps and go to satellite mode to help you pick out good spots if you havent done so already.

yeh ive had a look, by the crayfish factory is the best spot around the mariner. but if the greenough river mouth is open i will be hitting that spot pretty hard.
