My opinion is that the vehicle should always be heavier than the trailer for safety. I cringe when I think of oncoming geriatric drivers in Freelanders towing massive vans because a salesman told them it was safe.

Whats wrong with the Mazda 3 ? baaa I have not had that for a year now

Thats a little extreme doug. So to tow the old mans 3.5 ton boat I would need about a 6 ton truck?

You are right about 4 ton on any of those hilux / ranger / bt 50 et al though. They could no more pull 4 ton up than fly to the moon. It would be a mighty slow journey up collie hill aswell!

3.5 tonne boat should be in a pen at FSC not behind a car.

I'd tow it with a 100 or 200 series TD or an F250. Not a Landrover Discovery (which is rated to tow higher than both of those other more capable vehicles)

I once saw a Bertram 25 overpower the rusty post on the front of the trailer and cut a nice big Vee through the roof of a 60 series 'Cruiser when he did an emergency stop.
