The house and outdoor entertaining is ~500mē + garage. The coverage is warranted.

+1 For Multiple AP's in the same subnet with the same SSID. Set Wireless devices to connect to the one with the best signal strength.

I've got 2 WAP's setup like this in my place.

I have a Linksys wireless router, situated at the front of my house and I have perfect signal in my shed at the back of my block. If you start using repeaters, unless im way out of the loop, you will effectively halve your bandwidth, as they cant send and receive at the same time. Although Im sure someone will correct me on that

If you are going to, I would as said use an actual access point, same SSID/passcode that is hardwired for best throughput.

if you have good coverage in the area you're in maybe try vividwireless, i've just got one because they don't have wired ADSL 2 in my new area, very impressed so far, so quick, no dropouts, max signal strength 100% of the time, no wiring need at all, unlimited download and home phone for $97/month

the home phone plugs into one the of the 2 phone lines coming off the router/modem, then there are another 2 cat5 connections off the router and you can have another 5 wireless devices around the house too

i'm just wondering what i am gonna do with all the phone points that seem to be in every room of this new house

I run 2 wireless AP's. with different SSIDs, and at different channels so they dont interfere. All the laptops etc have been authed on both and they pick whichever has the best signal at any given time.

As others have mentioned, keep them all on the same subnet and get your router
to do the DHCP and then it doesn't matter if your iPhone switches AP it will still
keep the same IP address.

Something else I have done is get separate units for everything. An all in one
router-wireless-VOIP etc... is nice at the start, except when you need to restart
something. I have seprate wirells, to the router, and the VOIP is different again.
That way, when 1 device is flaky or needs a kick it is only that bit that you lose.
ie, if VOIP is playing up, I can reset the ATA and it doesn't kill the router or wireless.

Also consider getting a router that is easy to configure with QOS (quality of service).
That way you can give VOIP traffic high priority and other things like torrent low
priority. You can also guarantee bandwidth for browsing so things like iView
and torrents don't make surfing pwrx a pain.

Plenty of good advise already in this thread.

P.S. Make sure the AP's use WPA2 with AES. TKIP has a security flaw in it.

So my router (Belkin N1Vision) shat itself last night.. it's completely dead so it's time for an upgrade URGENTLY... I'm looking at sticking with Belkin but still open to suggestions.

I want something with a decent enough wireless transmitting speed so I can stream movies from my PC to my X-Box/PS3... any reccomendations of a good brand/model to go and buy.. also where should I get it from? Keen for your feedback before I fork out the big $$.
