thanks guys, will go with kato's suggestion. the adsl router sits on top of my top for the desktop anyway, so I'll just get the wireless router and connect it to the desktop pc via its lan cable. i didnt realise they had an option to physically connect to a pc.

Whats 'n' speed and b/g??

Can you suggest a router please, i notice there are varying mbps for them. What do I need?

Linksys WRT54G. Can't go past it, bang for buck.

The 802.11 wireless standard speeds are;
b - 11mb/s
g - 54mb/s
n - the newest/fastest one but there is no point jumping onto that as the laptops will only have "g" capabilities

As stated, I'm only on a 1.5mbps/256k connection, so I take it that one you mentioned would be plenty enough for that?

That is your internet speed.

There is also the speed for the wireless networks. Faster is better. Check your hardware, but everything should be able to run on 'g' profile.

Some computer shops will want to sell you 'n' since it is the latest and greatest... Unless you want to buy all new wireless cards for your notebooks too, ignore them and just get a 'g'.

Netgear DG834G have been some good routers for me.

do you need wireless cards even if the laptops have built in wireless lan? have to double check one of em, but the newest says it has 802.11b/g WLAN.

How about D-Link? Both the ADSL modem and the router I've had of theirs seemed good.

This is the older laptop -

What do I need to make it work?

TBH, all brands are pretty decent if you are just after basic needs. It's only when you start doing a few more things then the cheaper models fall over.
