Go here...
http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ ...and do some research. Everyone has their own opinion. Make up your own mind. Also get your teminology correct. There is wireless internet and wireless LAN... Wireless internet is just that. Expensive, but total fredom to roam within mobile phone service areas. Wireless LAN is where your ADSL router is connected to wireless base and lets you roam 50meters or so around your house.

I've only had a couple of dropouts that I've been aware of in the last 6 months. May go down a few times a day for all I know but it's always up when I go to use it. They may have some downfalls & dropouts.. but at 8/1, 80G's for $49 a month they can spit in my face & pull my hair. Given it's your first connection tho I'd probably go with Westnet. Just lock in for 6 months or a year & it'll be over before you know it. At least that way you can get decent assistance & if things go bad. Also might pay to get an ADSL 2 modem to save upgrading eventually.

we busted 350gb of trafic on our first month with amnet :P
that linksys router i just assumed was a dsl modem as well as router/wap/switch. all in one bundles are pretty good these days regardless. iiNet... some people say good, others say bad, i say: i have never had a good experience with them, since back when they started borging people mid 90's. as said tho, depending on suburb, westnet is your best bet (man thats an awesome rhyme, i should sell that to them). Problem with Whirlpool is you only ever hear the bad news come grab me at dutton

Just read the data sheet for the linksys jobbie, and yeah, it is a broadband modem/router as wello. for $12x it is a steal.

Thanks for all the feedback crew. Am fairly clear on what I want. It is wireless LAN not wireless mobile broadband.
Seems Westnet is stacking up ok for my lightweight needs. Can pick up a netgear DG834 wireless router/modem for $120 (mates rates) so its just connection ($99) on top of that and then the monthly access which for reasonable access starts at about $29.95 a month. Can get free connection and all sorts of other stuff if I sign up long term, but at this stage am just dipping the toes in the water so am happy to pay up front. Matt, thanks for the offer of setup. I am a computer dummy so might have to take you up on that. See you at Dutton. Cheers, BP |

I agree with the others, for a first connection go with Westnet, see how you use it and what you want to do... Then go nuts

I prefer Netgear prosafe gear if you want it to work, get a modem royter and a WG102, and if you have the dollars get a dumb modem, FVS and a WG102, works a treat |
