You have got to be tripping!!!! Great customer service my arse. Have you trying ringing the iinet tech support line or e-mailing themlately? 30 min wait min on the phone, my e-mail was not answered in a week, and many of the tech support guys are buck-passing, slack-jawed morons. In a word........SHITHOUSE.

There DL limits and speed (when it doesn't drop out) are good tho.

I worked for Westnet til late last year so I've seen how the operate as both an employee and a customer (running 1.5mbit/256kbit connection). They're the only ISP I'd confidently recommend to someone without fear of them being disappointed. They're tech support is excellent and well worth the money.

While iiNet and Amnet look great on paper, all the speed in the world won't impress you if you have problems, especially if they're support isn't up to scratch. Besides once you've got your home network and modem running sweet you can always upgrade to a faster connection if you really need later(1.5mbit is overkill already for most people.)

Also the WRT54G wireless router is excellent, I run one at home and haven't had any problems with reliabilty/dropouts/signal strength. It is purely a router, so you can get a very basic single port modem to pair with it and you'll have no problems (make sure its an ethernet modem, don't whatever you do go for a USB only modem they're useless).

edit: Westnet can provide a suitable modem for $79, the iConnectAccess611.

Sorry to dig up an old thread guys, but didnt wanna start a new one for nothing.

I'm not at all knowledgable when it comes to wireless internet, but want to get it. At the moment I am on an existing Westnet ADSL Plan 1.5Mbps/256kbps and we run 3 computers at home (1 Desktop, 2 Laptops), off and on via a ADSL router with network cables running across the floor/s!!.

How do I get wireless? Do I just buy a wireless router and the laptops should all work?

Bought my gf a laptop and wanna do the same at her house, so any advice appreciated.

Cheers,
Josh

I would leave your desktops cabled, just put the cables up in the roof..! Then pick yourself up a decent all in one wireless router/modem unit. You will find any newish laptops will already have wireless built in.

Buy a wireless router. (Don't worry about 'n' speed wireless. You will only want b/g if connecting to existing hardware)

Run a cable from the router to your desktop.

Set up wireless networking on the router (google WPA encryption).

Set up wireless connections on laptops (if they are newish (within the last 5 years) should have inbuilt wireless).

Profit.

What he says. Wireless cards for the desktops is a bit silly.
