Default Summon to court

Hi all,

My friend has received a letter summoning her to attend court because her car rego licence had expired for 1 month when she was pull over by police. She told the cop "i didnt realise it was expired"

She has to write a letter to explain herself if she wish to contest the charges but she doesn't know what to write.

Would you have any ideas?

Cheers for any input

If any of you or know someone who was in a similar situation, what penalties / suspension / outcome should she be expecting?

She will be fined for driving an unregistered vehicle. $600 fine if I recall.

P.S ignorance is not a valid excuse in the eyes of the law.

I am not sure if its a criminal or traffic charge, if its criminal, be nice and ask for a spent conviction.

She will get a $100 (maybe $150) fine at most plus court costs of approx $100. It will go down as a traffic conviction NOT a criminal conviction.

TJ if you got $600, I feel for ya because that is the largest I ever heard of EVER!.

As per the previous driving unregistered thread - someone needs to get <insert media hype solution here> on this to stir it up. Until it is over sensationalised in the media, the average Joe is going to get ass rammed for innocent / mistakes. I am guessing one would have to notify their insurance company of the conviction and therefore increase in premiums?

Although, better being caught by the cops than being involved in an accident where your rego wasnt paid......

I got pinged for driving an unlicenced vehicle in 08 - registration was expired 4 days past the grace period.

I paid the rego on the spot using my iphone and drove the car home. A summons arrived in the mail about 2 months later and i ticked the 'plead guilty, no need to attend court' box.

Another month later a fine for $550 incl court costs arrived in the mail.

Its a steep fine I know, but had i been in an accident my insurance would be void, i would have been proper f*cked and maybe end up tens of thousands out of pocket.
