Could anyone who is in the know tell me whether this is a bargain or a nightmare waiting to happen:

Porsche 1999 Carrera 996 4WD

Not for me but a mate who enquired with me and I have "no idea" (which shouldn't come as a surprise to some).

Looks good to me, justification on the low price would be mainly to age in my opinion as it has a full service history and was obviously a daily driver.

Newer model has a better interior and different lights I think but comes at a nice price too.

F1 Inspired

- Pre-2001 996 3.4 litre.. renowned for engine problems such as cracked heads and liners, and intermediate shaft bearing failure (starts as a death rattle, ends up in serious engine damage). Later model 996's got the more powerful and more reliable 3.6 litre..

- The 4wd/3.4 combo makes for a fairly slow Porsche (extra weight of the 4wd system), not only is the Carrera 2 lighter and faster, but they sell for a lot more.

- The 996 narrow body was never the prettiest Porsche out there.

- First of the water-cooled Porsches i.e. first of a series, puts some people off.

- That one has moderate km.. many are lower km than that.

All of the above make for a cheap Porsche!
