A senior police officer has been charged with reckless driving and his motorcycle will be seized after he was allegedly caught speeding almost 70km/h over the limit while off-duty.

Police launched an internal investigation in the wake of the incident on March 18 after allegedly finding another officer failed to take appropriate action and issue the 45-year-old off-duty sergeant with a ticket.

The alleged "hooning" sergeant, who works in the Peel District, and the other officer, who has not been named, have both been "stood aside" and placed on administrative duties until the investigation is finished.

The off-duty officer was allegedly caught on his private motorcycle travelling at 148km/h in an 80km/h zone on Baldivis Road, in Baldivis, on the evening of March 18.

Police have issued a surrender notice for his motorcycle.
The 45-year-old will appear in Rockingham Magistrates Court on May 16.
