Default Who here cycles in to work?

Hey guys,

I'll soon be working in Fremantle which is about 15km from home and considering getting a decent bicycle and riding into work instead of running on a treadmill to save time/money in the same process.

I haven't actually done cycling for a few years since riding to school along the bikepaths on leach highway.

How many people here cycle in to work or cycle during peak hour in general? I'm thinking I'll be cycling along the coast on Cockburn Rd to get into Fremantle but as someone fairly unfamiliar with cycling on big roads I'm still a bit spooked by the idea of large trucks etc going by at 80km/h if you're in a bike lane on the actual road.

Cheers.

I ride home some days. I have free parking in the city, so mrs comes to get the car from her work (also in town) and takes the car. And I ride either to my mothers house in Duncraig (21km) and meet her there, or to her parents house in Joondalup (32km) and meet her there, like I am doing tonight.

I am yet to embark on the 44km journey home, however I did do a 50km ride on Sunday, so I know I can cover the distance no worries. Just not had the opportunity, had planned on doing it tonight, but going to inlaws for dinner, so 32kms it is.

Obviously, I ride up the cycleway on the Mitchell, traffic is pretty steady. Never really go the journey without being passed by a couple of Cadel Evans wannabe's in lycra, and there's heaps of agro on the cycle ways, you'll see that as you start riding more frequently. My bosses ride every day, and they get into verbal stoushes and altercations regularly!

This is what my previous boss also said to me, other cyclists are actually worse than people in cars!

I think I'll take the bike out and try to get as far as possible into Fremantle on a Sunday afternoon just to check out the location and see what the bike paths are like.

I ride 3-4 times a week from Maylands to Nedlands. I get to follow the river the whole way. Absolutely love it! 15k each way.

Make sure you get your bike set up propperly as mine wasnt and i ended up hurting my neck. All good now but my neck still hurts sometimes.

Also lycra isnt that bad of a thing to wear. Has padding in nessesary spots.

Lycra shorts are fine to wear, under normal shorts... only because they have padded ass! Although, the seat on my Avanti is awesome. It's pretty comfortable. The seat on my Giant is not however! I still haven't invested in lycra though. Next mod for the avanti is click in pedals and shoes. That will speed me up from avg 28+km an hour over the 21km ride!

Clip ins are a must IMO! Help align your feet and legs. Suprising how much damage you can do to yourself with a bike when on it alot!

When at old Cockburn power station head towards ocean. There's a cycle path from there all the way to Freo. Passes my South Beach with cafes and SBH a block inland for refreshing ale on way home.

Path visible here closest to beach off McTaggart Road.

Careful off broken glass anywhere near carparks.

I occasionally ride to work down the coast road, Ocean Reef to just past Scabs and then turn inland to Osborne Park = 25km. I used to ride the freeway path but like Kym says, too many Cadel Evans wannabees trying to break the land speed record on the way to work. Besides, the coast road has much nicer scenery - lycra looks really good on some people

Tried clip ins for about six months but must be too old skool, getting my feet out never failed to scare the shit out of me every time I stopped

Cheers,

Wrxpc

I ride most days and have been riding/racing for 20 years, i wouldn't be riding along any roads with an 80km/hr speed limit in peak hour if i were you, asking for trouble. Do a couple of practice runs on the weekend to work out the back roads/ bike paths.
And you don't get "cycle rage" from the real bike riders, its the numpties who think they are good because they can ride along the path at 35km/hr. I'm going to be quicker than 99% of people out there and pass plenty, but i'll happily sit behind someone until its safe to do it.
