Get ready to be hated by every group in the word. Car drivers, pedestrians who think "shared path" means they can walk there fat arses 4 abreast so no one can pass, crazy club riders etc.

That said I've ridden for years and it's great. Save money on gas bills parking get fit etc etc.

Giant = good value for money IMHO, I've got three at the moment but lots of other good brands. Don't get Sora components they don't last. DO get cycle shorts your backside and man bag will thank you for it. Clip in's NEED PRACTICE. And at some point you will get stuck in and fall. But well worth it.

If pride prevents you getting skin type Fox make excellent MTB shorts with lining and I recommend,

Last point as per Kyms crash accident. Ride like everyone is going to try and kill you. Expect them to pull out in front when they dont see you, pull out in front when they do and at some point you probably will get clipped or hit. I've lost 2 bikes to cars so far. Carbon does not like being bent

MTB also a great sport and excellent tracks out Kalamunda getting built now, only have to worry about trees jumping out at you then.

Got towed in to work this morning by some hero in a full aero/carbon time trial bike. He was cruising at about 40-42kmh from Canning highway to the city and I was struggling to keep in his draft! 39 mins from Canning Vale to the City with that dudes help. Anyone into time trials?

South st has a bus lane in the mornings that us cyclists can use and then I just jump on the cyclepath down the freeway. It is always a good run, but I just can't wait for the road works on the cyclepaths to finish!

I ride fairly frequently and as others have said, I would definately recommend padded shorts to save your arse, especially if your just getting into it.

Also, given the amount of loonies out there (on road and on the bike paths) look at getting crash insurance. You can get it through somewhere like Bicycling WA (http://www.bwa.org.au/) or specialized bike insurance mobs.

DoT have some maps (Perth Bike Maps) which show some of the more decent routes, but I would say stick to the big paths and roads with bike lanes on the edge if you can... much safer!

Yeah have showers at work, and if you learn to fold your shirts, they won't get creased after sitting in a bag for 1hr.

I worked with a guy who rode to work - he said he lived 5mins away. He would ride into work wearing his pants, shirt & tie tucked in. He also rode to the shops at lunch time.

Dirty stinking cunt never showered.

One morning I got in early and put a can of deodorant & soap on his desk - he got in and said "Who put this here?" - I said, "....dunno - perhaps it's a hint?"

He drove the next day & we never spoke again - he quit shortly after.

Cool story bro!
