From memory there is a show us your pushie thread but I can't find it, so I am posting on here instead.

Looking to spend around $500 or there abouts on a decent racer, what should I be looking for and where are the best places in Perth to get a good deal?

$500 on a 'new' road bike isn't going to get you anything too crash hot. It will get you a good starting bike. IMO, the frames are all the same, brand for brand, all made in the same factory in China, just different stickers on different days of the week.

What you want to look for is the gearing. It's the sole important factor on a road bike IMO.

Personally, if I had $500 to buy a bike, I'd be on Gumtree trying to find a second hand bike with Shimano Sora gears as a minimum, but if you can find something with 105's then you're on the right track.

As above.. $500 won't buy you anything that'll last in a road bike, and it'll be very entry level and heavy as shit.

Buy a really really good 2nd hand one instead. You want at LEAST Shimano 105 group set as a minimum.

something like this is a great start

Felt Road Bike - Large Frame - Ultegra groupset | Bicycles | Gumtree Australia Nedlands Area - Shenton Park

I have a Avanti Blade flat bar road bike with Sora gears. I've ridden from the city to my house in Butler (45km) in around 1hr 40mins regularly. It's a good starting point to see if you like it. I bought the flat bar mostly because I got it for a steal, but because I liked the more upright seating position on a flat bar. I will be upgrading shortly, to a bike with Ultegra gears and drop bars.

The bike in the link above has an Ultegra groupset on it, which is Shimano's 2nd best group. Not sure what year it is, but either way its still Ultegra.

Cheers guys, thanks for the starting points.

I'm guessing the price point is around $1,500 for new then?
