Make friends with someone that is. Jobs get circulated through networks of contacts prior to being offered to joe public. My last 2 jobs were obtained before the company had even advertised.

Any idea what you want to do? What are your current skills? Or did you just see the salaries and think "I want a peice of that!"?

Sign up with multiple recruitment companies.

Decide what you want to do.

Start at the bottom if you have no trade or experience.

When I say start at the bottom, take anything! Be a TA, set up generators and lighting, clean trucks do anything you can to get in with a company and on a shift up north.
If you have brains and a go do it attitude you will only be doing the shit kicker jobs for a short while before you get promoted.

It's not "easy money" and like any job you start at the bottom.

All depends what you want to do in the mines. There are way too many options out there. First of all you need to know if you want to work in the underground mining industry or the open cut (landscapers) mining.

Best thing to do is to get as many tickets as you can, that way you are one step ahead. This is if you are willing to apply through recruitment agencies, if you know someone that can steer you in than all you might need is a MARCSTA.
HR license - go for open class, once you get hold of double clutching etc you will have no worries after. This way you are more appreciated and have more chance of using HR fleet in the mines.
MARCSTA - safety induction for mining
Senior first aid certificate - Very good to have no matter where you are working
My background is underground mining, I can't tell you much about open cut mining but here is a bit of info on undergound entry level:
If you want to work in the underground mining industry the 3 qualifications above are good enough to get your foot in the door. If you get a job as a (nipper) offsider underground that is your entry level into the ug industry. You will hear how it's a shit job from different people but that is the best way to learn how ug works. If you want a mining career and become a jumbo operator on $1000-$1500 a shift than go from the bottom and work your way up. UG goes from nipper, truck driver, service crew, charge up, bogger operator, jumbo operator or the lazy long hole driller that drills out stopes.
When I first started I wanted to work my way up to be a jumbo operator and still sticking to that plan.

When you say $1000 - $1500 a shift, how long is the shift?

12 hr shift. Also if you get your hands on the air legging side you get those figures within 10 hrs. Big money out there
