Driller offsider is probably one of the easiest to get into the mining industry with no qualifications.
There are companies out there always looking for people and some of them are willing to take in people with little to no experience
Its a shit job from what I've heard but its an OK stepping stone onto something bigger.

I must admit it is shit to start, but if you snag a minesite as a pose to exploration your on a winner. Get a good driller and you could fast track your way to driller, with current wages you could expect $45 and upwards per hour for what is a pretty easy job.

Company called Australian Contract Mining (ACM) take alot of 'greenies' i got a start there as a nipper. Only qualification i had was a diploma in horticulture. (so not relevant). Good sites about $390 shift rate when you start. Get on a bogger and its about $700. Office is in west Perth.

ACM have to be one of the worst contractors out there. At the interview got promised all sorts of stuff. Got to the alacer mine site in Higginsville and all was different. The girls that sit in the office in West Perth have no idea what goes on at their sites, talk shit to get people out there.
The OH's department was the main reason i left. On the induction day with greenies first time UG, they weren't even shown how to scale properly or how to use the damn scaling bar. Being at other sites where I was shown how to do things the right way made me think that the safety representatives had no idea what they're supposed to do at this site. The amount of short cuts taken is very sad.
However Barminco is way better than ACM, worked for them couple years and never had any dramas.
Mining has changed since the first time I started working underground. You had to earn up and work like a slave to move up the ladder and yet till today I'm still learning.

heya

iv been in the mining industry for 8 years and may be able to help you out a bit....
first of all you need to get a trade or tickets...without this you will be a shit kicker TA and that leads you no where in the long run and you get treated like shit!
Experience is a major thing also - local work for a few months will help you alot and contribute to a higher pay packet on site in the mining industry.
Most mining companies use labor hire to 'test' out your skills and see if you can handle it out there....be prepared for 12 hour shifts and also night shift. Sign up with recruitment agencies that specialise in the mining industry....i hire labor from companies such as corestaff, programmed and skilled.
Lastly its know you know - the better networking you can engage with will benefit your future.
At the end of the day you have to decide what you want to do and stick to it..eventually you will get there and enjoy the large $$$$ on offer up north

First thing I would do is avoid listening to people saying you can make $1-2k per 12 hour shift. Yes it is possible to achieve these kind of jobs after a long period of time working your way up and fighting every other bugger out there for the job.

Yes you will hear all these stories of people making $150/hr as a peggy filling up the coffee machine in the smoko hut. Try and find one of them who will show you a payslip proving it. Others will tell you of the great rate they are getting, but fail to tell you it is only for a 2 week shutdown, not their normal salary for the year.

Starting off, your pay will be shit to average shit. To be blunt, you have nothing that any company 'needs' compared to any one else out there. Be prepared for that and don't be disgruntled that you aren't making $300k/year like The West keeps saying everyone is.

Be prepared for a lot of long hard work. The hardest issue (and the reason why companies ask for prior experience) is not actually doing the work. It's keeping sane after hours. A lot of sites now have a lot for people to do after hours to help with this. Make sure you research where you are going and you are happy with that.

Be prepared to spend a lot of your own money furthering your skills. Don't expect an employer to just instantly send your on lots of courses.

If you have absolutely no experience, I would be looking for local work first. i.e. If you want to be a TA for boilermakers, pipe fitters, welders on a site, I would be applying for a local workshop position to learn what people do, what the lingo is and what is expected of you.

As others have said, put your name down with recruitment companies. Talk to friends to find any position going.

Best of luck.

THIS! I am yet to see anyone who claims these massive wages, prove it. (talking about the general workers, not management)

There are some companies giving chances to 'greenies' but usually it's a case of applying at the right time. All the ads that came out saying anyone can get jobs and its easy work in the mining industry is a load of horse shit. (generally speaking)
