I think you'll find that its cheaper for the government to pay the parent to stay home rather than subsidise low / middle income workers to send their kids off to day care for the first 16 weeks.

Take the rose coloured glasses off, the Goverment isn't going to give a shit about a few extra fuckwits roaming the streets if mum and dad weren't able to stay home.

I speak personally!!
I came from a broken poor family!
Although I have turned out reasonably well, none of my other siblings have!!
My mother stayed home til the you youngest was in high school!
My point is that money (beyond the baby bonus etc) makes a BIG difference to RAISING children!
If you are reliant on the govt money them wtf do you plan to do for the next 17.5 years??
I agree that spending time with your children is priceless (in SOME cases) a bad mother is bad! No govt money will change that!

There is no way you can convince me that govt money is a requirement!

Neither is the FHOG, it helps people to get in the system. Doesn't pay off the house.

Anybody relying solely on 18 weeks of a limited government payment to raise their kid for 18 years is an idiot. People using the system to have a child, spend some time raising it and then getting back into the workplace is a good idea.

By taking the stress off families at the start of the child's life it enables parent's to concentrate on raising their kids.
Sounds good in theory, but drive thru Rockingham and have a look at the results of stay at home parents with access to govt handouts...

You seem to keep confusing a one off assistance payment (baby bonus or paid parental leave) to a continual fortnightly payment.

BB & PPL is purely to subsidise the first few months that one parent is unable to work because they have to look after the baby. Mum needs to recover & bond & you're a complete fucktard if you say she can just go back to work & put the child into daycare at a few weeks old. Not all families earn bulk money & can just alter their spending to cover the additional costs let alone the regular payments which need to be covered by a single income. These families need some assistance & apologies if you end up contributing a matter of cents towards this through tax. I'd be more concerned about all the other money this Government is pissing down the toilet on stupid decisions.

No shit people abuse the system with the dole/family payments & that I don't agree with.

should you not save enough money before you have kids to cover the loss of the 2nd wage yourself, instead of expecting the rest of us to cover you? If it's only for the first few months, surely it can't be that hard to save? And if you can't even manage that, perhaps a rethink is in order regarding having kids at that point?

Wonder if my puppy classifies as an adopted child.

I could do with $10k for a new Macbook.
