Was thinking of selling mine this way but have to agree with you on this.

They take it on at an agreed value (generally once you've already been trying to sell it for a while) . Then once it's its been there for a month or two (and you start wanting the money) they call you up and say it's too expensive. Then knock you down a bit. Then when someone does try to buy it and they try knock it down, the dealer rings you and tries to knock you down more so they still make their profit. I"so for example you agree on $10k, they sell it for $12k and they keep the 2k in the middle. The longer it sits there, the more they'll try knock you down.
Can't speak for the thrashing it part tho. That would be my concern.

My old man used to do caravan sales this way.

Don't forget, at the end of the day, they are at sales people.

I am not sure of the legal ramifications, but I do know people have got into trouble when the dealer goes tits-up, and their car is impounded by the receiver or whatever. Whether they end up having any legal hold on your car I don't know, but IMO the main thing is to go with a reputable company, not some fly-by-night down the road.

Cheers.
