Don't do camping just to save money. Motels are cheap and everywhere.
first thing when you land is go to a T Mobile store and get a prepaid sim with data. ($50 from memory). On our road trip there were times when we did not have accomodation booked ahead.Few times we would rock up to a town/city and park in the Maccas carpark for free wifi to book a hotel down the road. Went to hotwire.com or kayak.com and book a hotel at last minute cheap rates. As an example , we stayed at Stratosphere Vegas for $30 a night for 2 nights. Fuckn cheap. That included entry to the roof which alone cost about $40 per person.

Have fun on your trip -- I'll be planing my own in a few years. Big place to explore!
Found it.

Pretty handy opinions and experiences.

Seems like I'm on the right track on where to go - but seems not many people do the full road trip.

We are budgeting $15-20k for the 2 of us for 5 weeks including spending money - hopefully this will be enough!

I'd be making sure i get on board lots of good eats!

Racks of ribs, brisket & BBQ, reuben sandwhiches, NY deli's.

Go to a decent supermarket to get road trip snacks, as you will mainly find 1000 types of jerky at the servos and Reece's chocolates which suck. Check out my Facebook page for heaps of pics of my USA trips . Jarrod Sierociak .
As someone mentioned, hotels are very cheap. We never booked anything in advance. We just rocked up to most places. For $70-80 a night you can get a ok room.
Highly recommend driving through the Rockies ,Grand Canyon was spectacular at sun rise.
I have friends or relatives in LA, San Fran , Tucson , Kansas City ( Harley Davidson factory - tour was interesting ) Fort Collins , Dayton OH , Miami if you get really stuck .
If you can , try and squeeze in some time in Canada ( I love this place) .
If you go during winter , buy some de-icer for your windscreen washer. We made this mistake and it froze over which made it really had to drive. One of the roads got shut down because of a blizzard and the national guard put us and 1000 other people up in a gymnasium .

Have just found that the college football season begins August and ends January

On the plus side, have just booked tickets to see the Boston Redsox play at home (baseball).

I see that the NBA season will almost be over by the time we are over there, but we may be able to get tickets to a final... but they will not be cheap I imagine!
