Default Group B

I have loved these cars for ages, and with the last rally aus poking its head out, i did a bit of Youtube trawling and came up with a few choice vids

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nYhiJeRPgdw
awesome vid with some great closeups with the engine bay up

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpAs8Fb_WZY
awesome sounds

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkLH56Jx6qI
this one is a bit of a tribute to Henri Toivenens crash, which was the last nail in the coffin for GroupB. the first half is ass boring but the second half shows crash footage that I had never seen before

unfamiliar with the Group B cars? look here
http://www.autozine.org/strange_car/..._60.htm#205T16

Group B homologation required something like 200 cars be built, (as opposed to 5000 for Group A) a tiny number, and most of the excess cars were sold to the public at a stupid loss, just to ensure the manufacturer could compete. most were half finished when they left the factory, simply to sell them

my personal fav has to be the Audi Quattro S1, ridiculous wings and upwards of 600hp. based on an actual street car, unlike most of the other groupb cars which were specially made for the rally.

the quattro sport road car & early rally model

was lucky enough to find a genuine Lancia Stratos HF sitting in the service carpark at rally aus this year, nearly came on the damn thing

another fav car was the pug 205, based on a lowly fwd 1.4L model, this had the engine mid mounted and kicked serious ass, huge ass wide body and heaps of grunt

check out the size of the flares

its my dream one day to find one of these homologation models, preferably one of the Audi QuattroSports

But i am pretty confident i would settle for any of them =)

for those of you that remember my last car, my little 323, i kind of wish i had held onto it, it was one of 30 Australian delivered Mazda 323 GTXs, homologation model for the 323 that one the very first rally Australian in 1988 and a fair few European victories

so anyway, there is jesters groupb & rally thread. discuss.

There is a great story about one of the group B (Audi Quattro??) cars doing tarmac testing at one of the european GP tracks. Based on its times in testing had it lined up at that years GP it would have qualified in the top 10!!!!

heh, thats a a bit of Chinese whispers Blaise. I've read it on several sites, one mentioned they did a test on the F1 track itself with a lancia delta on dirt tires and would have been on the second row.

If you watch that first vid the driver being interviewed says at the start how they were 4 seconds off the pace of the F1 cars on gravel, but he only mentions that the gravel road was the same length as the F1 track, not driving on the track itself

But i have heard it enough times to think its true

Might be some truth in that. I read it in a magazine, cant remember which one, but it was a feature on group B. Had some reasonable times to back it up... either way they were off the hook. Super charged and turbo charged Nuts!!! And all sorts of roumours about roll cages being used as reserviours for nitrous to help spool the whole show up.. (This I think is more urban myth...)

went quote searching

Quote:
To give you an idea of the kind of performance GroupB cars were capable of I'll mention that in the 1986 season Henri Toivonen made two laps around the Estoril circuit, during a stage of the Portuguese rally, the fastest of which, in 1 minute and 18,1 seconds, would have qualified him in the sixth position of the F1 Grand Prix that same season. Ayrton Senna had the Pole Position in the 1986 Portuguese Grand Prix in 1 minute and 16,7 seconds...Toivonen was using the Lancia Delta S4 and was accompanied by his usual co-driver Sergio Cresto.
Quote:
Group B factoid: The Delta S4 was so fast around the Estoril GP circuit that it would have qualified in 6th place for it's homologation year GP if it had been allowed to enter!
Quote:
The "myth" has some facts in it. Toivonen DID run teh S4 on the Estoril circuit ..... BUT it included a loop of gravel, so comparing times isnt' "fair". BUT it was said that the F1 teams stopped their "strutting" when they saw the times Henri posted
Quote:
As i read somewhere, the Lancia Delta S4 under Henri Toivenen lapped the portugese F1Gp track that year in a time quick enough to secure 6th on the Gp F1 grid!
wouldn't surprise me in the least. with unrestricted horsepower (600bhp in most cases) and a minimum weight of 960kg your going to be *flying* wether its on tarmac, gravel, or off the side of a cliff.

its also on wikipedia, so it must be true :P

Quote:
In 1986 Henri drove the Delta S4 at the Estoril track. He set such a fast time that he would have qualified in 6th position at that years Formula 1 grand prix. This proved the immence speed of the Group B cars.
