Hmm there's some really nice backgrounds there!

Seems like with most things Vista, the good bits were all left out!

Yep Dan is on the money, multiple exposures composited to give a high dynamic range photo (HDR). You could also use a neutral density(ND) or gradiated neutral density(GND) filter to darken the sky and give the fore ground a better exposure.
