Im going to go out on a limb and suggest that you probably don't even want a dslr if your not that seriously into photography. At the end of the day will probably want something more portable and less of a theft target. I would recommend a top notch point and shoot like the panasonics.

As others have said the twin lens kit lens generally suck. (cept the VR)

Did photography for 2 yrs @ hi school - i tend to think i know a little bit at the very least.

Definitely want a DSLR with view of picking up more lenses later on. Carrying it around isnt a problem.. and will have a point and shoot with me when the DSLR will be inconvenient (walking around in tokyo @ night etc)

I've found a few places that do the 450D for under 1k.. Is it worth the money over the 1000d?

yes the 1000d is the very cheapest entry level, 450d certainly good value under 1k. Although both are just plastic.

for a couple hundred extra the pentax k20d gets you a magnesium body and weather proofing, more pixels, more control etc.

Personally I'd go the D60 with the twin VR lenses. No, they're not the best lenses in the world, but give a great start point, and for the money, you cant go wrong. I bought the D40 earlier this year, and love it, i only wish i had a few more mp resolution. I still dont know how to use it 100% and probably dont make the most of the features it has.

These are a few of my efforts with the D40.

Work out what lens syetem you want to go with. Camera bodies come and go but a good lens will last you 20 years. Some 15 year old zeiss lenses still hold up against the best offerings from canon and nikon.

get a d90 if u can afford the extra mulla. much better camera in all respects...

massive dynamic range, IQ and really really clean high iso shots. cant ask for much more for $1k price range.
