for ultra wides on a crop sensor it's really a 3 horse race:

sigma, canon, tokina

sigma is cheaper but doesnt have the same sharpness as the canon. Canon is the dearest though. Tokina are about to release an ultra wide which is meant to be the goods (sharpness and price combined) worth checking out IMO

How about Tamron 11-18 or 17-35? (both had for $800-900)

Well Jamie (slappy) has a 10-22 I think though it will only work with croped sensor camera so if in case you ever upgrade or want to use it one a fullbody camera then kinda stuck.

But the 10-22 will give you that distored look it doesnt keep the stright lines.

Damn aus Dollar , that sigma was cheaper when i bought it.
Was around the $660 price from Digrev hong kong.

n00b question but - what is the deal with this cropped sensor stuff?

What is it? I'm assuming the higher end SLR's (EOS 50D/5D etc) do not have it?

http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tut...ensor-size.htm

The Canon 5d and 1ds are full frame cameras.
xxxd and xxd series are croppers.

Fullframe is equivilant to a 35mm film, Will Give you a much better image and more colour depth. Full frame kicks ass,

Crop sensor is basically that imagine a full sized sensor and you chops all the edges off all the way around

couple shots i have done with the sigma 12-24
Dont mind the two room shots being bit dark was trying to get the light right still playing lol but shows u the width anyway with out lines looking like fish eye.

I tested out the sigma 10 - 20, f4 - f5.6 briefly, seemed pretty nice but i was put off by its slow speed

- all my lens lust lenses are f2.8 or better :P

pentax have a 10-20 f3.5 - f4.5 so ill need to check that out. But from what i've seen the sigma has been getting good reviews.

Im going to do a little round up of all the options for myself and ill post what i find here...

Speed doesn't matter for landscapes or lightning shots.
Generally you want to use a narrower aperture to keep everything sharp anyway.
