As per RSR-WRC, i recommend the D700.
After last month's price drop, it now retails for sub 2k.
Full frame, and miles ahead of the D90.

RSR-WRC, what does yours come with? Lenses? I may be keen.

I ended up going with the Canon EOS 60D (twin lens kit).

18 mega pixel loving....... 1080 Hd recording (30,25 & 24P), 1/8000 max shutter speed, up to 6fps.

For others that are reading this thread looking as DSLRs I bought a 550D for my daughter last week, similar specs than the 60D but not as quick so less suitable for the automotive photography Rossco wants to do but for $800 delivered (body only, aussie model) it's a nice bit of entry level kit.

600D is almost identical but has a fancy flip LCD screen.

For those with more to spend the new 1D mkV is rumoured to be out soon with a 5D mkIII released about 6 months later.

just looking at the Canon EOS1000D twin lens for $650.

is this a good price/camera for the price.

I am just a beginner so not after anything too fancy.

Have a good look at the Pentax Kx twin lens kit for $699 from leederville Cameras.

It records 720p HD video (no video on the 100d)
it has a 1/6000 max shutter (1/4000 for the 1000d).
5 frames per second (3.5 for the 1000d)
12.4 mega pixel (10.0 for the 1000d)
In body image stabilization.

It's a lot of camera for < $700
