Canon fan boy here, rather than get a twin lens kit see if there's an enthusiast kit with a better quality IS USM lens.

Im a little confused about the canons nommenclature well not really just want clarification..

I want to get a decent DSLR so i wont have to upgrade for a fair while..

Now looking at the 60D which is the replacement for the 50D?

With cannon does the lower the number = to a better camera. i.e 5D/6D??

Is there much benefit with either one of those over the 60D apart from the price.

Now lens, what size lens do most people commonly use? i.e 18-100mm etc? I want to get a decent single lens rather than the twin lens kit.

You want the lowest number you can afford.

The way I see the range:
1D - Pro
5D - Pro portraits
7D - Pro sports

Saying that, unless you want the whizz bang features of full frame or massive frame per second shooting a 60D is great.

Lenses - Get L series glass for the best photos. For walking around stuff I use a 18-200mm lens. Not the best photos, but they are pretty good.

But if you don't want quality and want practical, just get a point and shoot. I've taken better pictures on Georgie's Canon G10 than with shit lenses on a DSLR.

The only catch is there's different versions of the 1D, 5D etc, so you have to watch for that also.

I have taken some ripper photos with a point and shoot, some times it's better to keep it simple so you can quickly snap a photo rather than worry about buggering up a number of different settings.

I usually put my DSLR back onto Auto mode after i've been shooting so I can quickly snap something if I need to.

Yeh my friend has a 500D i think and use that all the time in auto mode, havent bothered with anything else at this stage as its not my camera.

So thats why i was thinking of getting a 60D which should have more features if required that i can learn to use..

My advice...

If you are using a SLR on auto mode, get a point and shoot.

The 550D is almost the same specs but a lot cheaper, then if you find you love photography spend money on lenses and upgrade to a better camera body in a few years.

Loving the 60D so far....

A little fill flash to get rid of the shadow on the cars ass end....

I still reckon the Pentax Kx is great value for a first Dslr.
