First generation Rex
Model history First generation Rex (1972 to 1981) Starting this week, we start a new series on the Subaru Rex. Following on from the Subaru 360 and R-2, the Rex, named after the Latin word for “king,” was Subaru’s third light car model. Launched on June 29, 1972, the Rex was a RR vehicle equipped with a 360 cc water-cooled two-cycle engine. A sporty two-door model, it had a wedge-shaped exterior. In March 1973, the Rex four-door sedan was launched, and in October, a new series equipped with a water-cooled four-cycle engine satisfying new exhaust gas controls was introduced. 1973 was a year of major economic upheaval that witnessed the transfer of the yen to a floating rate system and the oil shocks. *In February 1974, the Rex Custom 5 - a five-speed transmission version with emphasis on economy - and the Rex Van were introduced. In September that year, the New Rex series was launched, and the “Wagon” was added to the lineup. In January 1975, Subaru launched the SEEC-T system compatible with the exhaust gas controls of the time. The Rex SEEC-T series that was launched in December of this year became the first light car to comply with the 1976 standards on exhaust gas emissions.
