Lightbulb What is the difference between water-cooling and air-cooling

Continuing from last week, we introduce excerpts from a feature article on the new model Subaru R-2 that appeared in “Subaru” Magazine Vo. 67. The topic today moves onto the water-cooled engine that was added to the conventional air-cooled engine.

Feature Article: “Thorough Dissection of the New R-2 Series”*

What is the difference between water-cooling and air-cooling?*

Q Today we finally take a look at the water-cooled series. Can you tell us about its features first?

A The water-cooled series basically has four main features: First, it adopts a high torque water-cooled engine; second it adopts an electric fan cooling system that has excellent cooling efficiency; third, it has a powerful hot water heater that can switch between inside and outside air; and fourth, it has a quiet design that shuts out noise and vibration.

Q From what you say, it seems to be entirely different from the air-cooled series.

A Some things are different, and others aren’t. In terms of the Subaru ideal of building a multipurpose and user-friendly car that is liked by all, it is exactly the same. The Subaru stance of thoroughly designing down to the details has been upheld. Therefore, taking the front grille as an example, a design suited to water-cooled engine is adopted, however, the base design is the one from the air-cooled series.

Q There seem to be no good reasons for adopting water-cooled design.

A That’s a sharp question. Both the air-cooled type and the water-cooled type have their respective merits and it is hard to decide which one is superior. The water-cooled engine is quieter and has better heater performance. Moreover, water-cooled cars generally tend to be regarded as higher quality vehicles. Therefore, in the case of Subaru, we regard the water-cooled series as a high class model within the wide variations of the R-2. We consider this to be an answer to the diversifying demands of users. Therefore, among the two models of Super L and Custom L, the Super L has the same level of fittings as the air-cooled Super Deluxe, while the Custom L has some luxurious fittings on the same level as the GL plus steering lock, hot wire printed glass on the rear window and so on. The vehicle also has a trunk hood ajar warning buzzer and speed warning, etc.
