we have an '06 XT and i have used it to tow a car trailer + car ( probaly work out to around 1600kgs combined ) a few times now and each time it did it with ease. tow rating is 1800kg ( with the "reece" type hitch ). the only time it struggled with the car + trailer was when trying to pull out round a corner up a hill in Rolleystone but i just gave it shit and it did it. haven't used it offroad at all though.

So (on topic) you want an AWD or 4WD to use as a second car with occasional beach driving and towing a loaded horse float.
My advice is not to get a Forester since you will be compromised on the towing side. If you don't want a "big" 4WD, then the ideal vehicle to do everything you want would be either a Vitara diesel or X-Trail diesel...but you will be paying more since they are reasonably recent models (esp the X-Trail). So the other option is a diesel Navara....they aren't actually that big...I have a TD Pathfinder (same chassis) and it's about sme length as a Falcon or Commodore. Advantage is that they have good power, good towing ability and good fuel consumption. Research anbd test drive,....

Cheers boys. I've had a look into some of the other smaller 4wds I.e Rav4s, Hyundai Sante Fes and Terracans. The Rav4 seems to have the best towing capacity out of the lot andd is marginally cheaper than a foz of the same MY. My grandparents used to have one which they used to tow their small caravan when doing the grey migration as well as using it offroad at beaches such as Myalup and Tims Thicket. Pop used to have an awesome 80 something or rather Vitara that he'd give shit on the beach I know which 4wd I would prefer if we had the space and need for a big one and that would be either a Lancruiser or Patrol. Growing up as a beach bum with 4wd beaches right next door to my house dad taught us all how to drive and I absolutley hate driving his Navara on the beach. The clutch is horrible and the power steering doesn't make beach driving fun. I loved driving the troopie and Patrol he used to have
