There's 3 things that usually go wrong with the 2.5's, and owning the car for 8 years and having the intention of keeping it for as long as possible, it was always a case of when and not if, haha.
It's just a surprise that it was the head gasket. I would have thought pistons/ringlands would be the first problem to arise. New gasket, studs, pistons, rods and bearings will happen. Will keep the current block if there's no damage (shouldn't be, hasn't overheated, nothing went bang, still driveable off boost for the moment). If there's something else wrong, 257 short block and change the pistons, studs and rod bolts. That's just a list from my very limited knowledge. Will have a chat to a couple of people to see what else may be required and more specific brands/specs. I drop the car off to STechnic on Thursday and they'll start pulling it down when they get the chance.

Hopefully the current block is salvageable, there doesn't seem to be any indication that it wouldn't, but worst case scenario...
Simple and effective will be good to see what power the new combo can push.

Not really going to be pushing it to be honest but I won't complain at a 10-15hp gain.

I've heard there are a bucket load of 257's being rebuilt around Perth at the moment.
Mind you that's probably normal.

Thought I would outline what's going to be done to the car. It will take a while as my chosen builder has gone on holidays for two weeks, is in Queensland, and now a delay in the availability of my pistons. Build details below:
New EJ257 short block Strip short block & chemical hot wash Torque plate bore and hone for oversized pistons Nitto H-Beam billet conrods Wiseco 99.75mm pistons ACL race series bearings Set crank and rod clearance, piston to bore clearances and ring gaps. Engine balance including flywheel, pressure plate and crank pulley 11mm STi oil pump (de-burred and cleaned up) OEM gasket kit including multi layer SS MLX head gaskets The engine will be built by Robin Berardo of PerFOURmance Motorsport in Queensland. He is highly regarded, been in the game for over 25 years and in the words of Doug @ STechnic - "honourable". Way back in 1999 he screwed together an 11 second WRX which later ran 10's and has been involved in Rallying quite heavily albeit a change of involvement after a nasty accident (moving to engine building and head mechanic for teams, etc). Yes there are plenty of people in Perth who can screw an engine together but word of mouth, Robin's credentials and attention to detail when replying to my emails and questions is what made me choose his services. There also seems to be a hefty "WA tax" to either parts markup or labour in the local quotes I received... Additional items: * Go Fast Bits non-underdrive crank pulley (needed a completely metal item for engine balancing as the OEM item has rubber inserts and cannot be balancing with the rest of the engine) * Roger Clark Motorsport "Extreme High Performance" 11mm head studs * Roger Clark Motorsport oil filter * Project Mu magnetic oil bung * Go Fast Bits Mach 2 recirculating diverter valve (BOV) * Whiteline positive shift kit * Kartboy shifter bushings * STi/Group N transmission mount * Flex conversion with ECUTEK + Zeitronix flex kit @ Tokyo Motorsport

No, didn't bother. In all likelihood my track day numbers would be very minimal and I'm not going to be punting it around Barbs. Also unlikely to go beyond 22-23psi. Most builders agreed not to bother unless seeing well over 400hp and/or 25psi. With my budget it was either go closed deck and 98ron, or leave it semi-closed and run e85/flex.. I opted for the latter. Less propensity to see knock, yadda yadda.
