Detenation can cause abnormal bearing wear also as far as im aware.

Bearing failure down to probably 3 things . Overloading ,bearing crush and lack of lubrication .
Overloading and bearing crush are caused either by exceeding maximum engine rpm or by running the bearing with a higher loading force than designed for eg ... high boost big turbo on a stock bearing and lubricated bottom end and Knock The lack of lubrication usually goes hand in hand with these factors . due to the crushing under the overload factors , the oil film that coats the bearing surfaces is thinner heats up more and breaks down eventually causing metal on metal contact or degradation of the hardening due to excessive heat causing surface degradation. This problem is overcome with Phase drilling the journals on the crank , Using high quality bearings that are assembled and clearanced correctly , upgrading the oiling system eg larger oil pump , aftemarket pickup , aftermarket windage tray. The windage tray can also be a contributing factor due to its poor factory design . A good quality aftermarket one such as Kiiler B works much better at controlling oil flow away from the counter weights preventing roping of the oil and aeration , also controlling flow back to the sump much better. At the end of the day everything has a limit and works well when it is used within its design parameters , with the 2.5 its very easy to reach or surpass these limits. Tuning at the limit and pushing boost at the limit will always limit engine life especially when stock . Which you were aware of as you have stated before Gordan. Good luck with the new build should hold together much better . Last edited by amtrapid; 14-08-2015 at 08:59 AM. |

knock is basically like a hammer blow coming down the piston -> rod -> crank -> case. bearings stuck in the middle get the full brunt of it.

The Killer B baffle and oil pump/pickups, etc. - are they worth doing on a mildly modified car and can they be done without pulling the engine? (eg. swapped out on a hoist).
