Brains commonly disengage when adrenalin and worry set in. To go into a little more detail and perhaps even embarrass myself, I live next door to my parents (duplex block - it's a bit Everyone Loves Raymond around here).

All I saw was the non-reflective walk across my front yard towards my parents door and I got up, ran to the back room, grabbed the bat, fucked about with the keys to unlock the front door and ran out there. I didn't know whether my Mum was at her front door and he was going for her or what. I just switched into protect mode.

By the time I had gotten out there, he was on the footpath (off our properties). I would have cracked him in the legs if he was still on the property, but if I go marching down the street with a weapon I open myself up to a fair bit of trouble if all goes pear shaped.
