Whateva size you want haha. Um I've fit 6 and a half inch splits into the front of my 05 and 6 inchs in the rear door cards. It all dipends really if you want a custom look or just to replace the standards...I beleive the fronts are six inchs and the ones in the rear door cards are 4 inches.
Hope that helps a Lil.
Gwd luck.

5.25 inch in the front standrad
4 inch in the rear standard

Can get up to 6.5" in the front without too many changes. Just watch the depth of th speaker. Some 'deeper' types can hit the window as it reaches the down position. Spacers can be fitted to help mounting.

Spend more money on the fronts and leave the rears stock

Almost any stock car (with speakers in the front and rear doors/or rear parcel shelf) will sound like the .. well sound.. is coming primarily/at its loudest from behind you. And hence some people make the mistake of spending a shizaload of coin on front AND rear speakers when upgrading. Some esse fooolz sometimes ONLY upgrade their rears!
BUT, once you have new splits up the front (with tweeters on the dash), your soundstage will be in front of you and higher up - basically it may sound like the music is coming from in front of you. (if you don't know what splits are, that's where you have the mid-bass speaker in the regular front door position, but you also have a tweeter separate from that. Each tweeter is usually mounted in the corner of the dash to maximise and lift the 'stage' in front of you.

If you're on a budget, many people, including myself, will recommend you save coin by not upgrading your rear speakers at all, and instead spending your saved money on better fronts. Many will then dim the rears so that they are more like some 'ambient' sound (i.e. you can't really distinguish they're there, but if you suddenly turned them off, you would notice it immediately). Some people don't even have ANY sound coming from the rears, except when they have passengers.
One reason not to have the rears up loud when you have only upgraded fronts is that the different speakers make different frequencies stand out. When the two sound waves from each speaker get to your ears, it can sound odd. Your brain doesn't likie it too muchly! And neither do your ears. And hence neither does your soul. Yes, your SOUL! Which is the whole reason you do this, to please your soul. And score chix. Or guys/Ajaygay, in your case.

Mwahahahahahahaaaand so to answer your question: I personally don't know what size speakers you need to fit in an 03/04 WRX
I think other people have answered it pretty well already though

With WRX's 95% of the time the biggest limiting factor for speaker fitment is the skills and resources of the individual fitting the speakers.

As stated by others in the thread, 6.5" for the front, 5.25" for the rear.

But Wait if you're fitting it out macey, surely a full custom boot install with x2 14" subs and x4 amps along with the 8 speakers in the front will be on the cards
