So has anyone here unlocked their PS3 either by means of a USB dongle (jailbreak) or with a custom firmware?

Up until the other day I was using my Nokia N900 to jailbreak my spare PS3 but the problem was being stuck at 3.41 (which meant not being able to run newer games such as GT5, ACB etc).

But the other day I decided to take the plunge and put on the 3.55 custom firmware mod (no more USB or phone hacking) and so far it's been pretty much smooth sailing.

mann im on 3.55 and also wanna jail break my ps3 but i cbf reading up on how to downgrade... too many shit talkers... so u can play back ups now fine?

You don't need to downgrade anymore, you can stay with 3.55 and mod the official Sony firmware. It's reasonably simple to do, but from what I've been reading if you don't get the mods done properly first time around then black screens can be expected to occur randomly. I must have fluked mine because I've never had a black screen and every new game I've tried (GT5, blackops, ACB etc) all work perfectly running straight off the internal hard disk.

If you want a hand doing the mod give me a yell, I'm not working at the moment and am still waiting for my engine to be finished so time is one thing I have no shortage of at the moment but as I said it's fairly straight forward to do and only takes about 15 - 20 mins tops.

yeah ive been reading up about it but apparently 3.55 can be broken but its not possible to play backups... any truth to this?

That was the case for a few days until the updates were made but they work now.

I'd like to go but an XR6 (which I'm driving at the moment) at a WRX cruise is just not cricket so I'll be sitting this one out.

im in for some cricket .... ummm budge i wouldnt mind a hand with the modding... what can you organise for me?

Easiest way would be to drop over with your PS3 and I can put it on for you and show you how to go back to standard in case you ever want to.

Next best way is if I write up a quick step-by-step guide with the links to what files you need to download but this can (although highly unlikely) end in tears (or at least a bricked PS3) if something isn't done properly. Also different PS3's (eg phat, slim, original 60gb etc) can behave differently when patched and can give you the impression that things are broken when they aren't or vice versa.
