I have the z5500's also. Great speakers. Not sure if you knew these Z5500 'tricks', but here you go.

Quote:
SECOND SKIN EFFECT
There's a "2nd skin" trick with the Z-5500 Control Center. What you do is make sure the Control Center is in standby mode (i.e the red light is on) and then simultaneously hold down the input, effect, settings and mute buttons (i.e all except for level ) on the control panel for 6 seconds .

This will enable the 'second skin' feature. Instead of the red standby LED, you will have a nice pretty purple button. And the volume bar will also look different but it will take more 'bars' to reach the same volume as the traditional skin.

VOLUME BOOST MODE 11
When you turn the logitech speakers to full volume meaning at 22 bars. Continue turning the knob a few more times. The speakers will enter boost mode ranging 1 to 11.

SUPER VOLUME BOOST MODE 22
There's also Boost 22 for people who use 6Ch Direct mode. Just crank it all the way to Boost 11, then hold down mute button, and keep turning the knob. Boost mode will go from 11 to 22.

This is the highest volume level that the Z-5500 can go.

VOLUME+ OFFSET MODE
Hold down the mute button. Then turn the knob for effect to take place. Which can go from 1 to 11.

What this does is normalize sound. Adding more punch to both treble and bass. With the right settings on your sound card. Adding this mode in will do great wonders to sound. I personally have this mode on.

DIAGNOSTIC MODE
When the unit is off, if you press and hold the Input and Effect buttons simultaneously for six seconds, you will put the unit in "Diagnostic Mode". In this mode, whenever a digital stream is detected, it will display information about that stream for five seconds, just like a receiver does. Might as well always leave it in this mode. It doesn't hurt anything, and the information is fun to have

I run the same speakers as you Tim from a AuzenTech X-FI Bravura 7.1 card via The optical SPDIF output, and they sound so much clearer and louder than any creative or on board audio.

sweet, I have done most of the mod tricks. though didnt know about the mute one.
still not quite understanding what it does though.

So the RCA SPDIF connection is just as good as optical ?

Becuase that sound card doesnt have optical

It just seems funny to go from optical to rca type connection with out loosing quality ?

"2pcs 3.5mm miniplug-TOSLINK adapter for COAX+OPTIC combo connector"

They just have a way of re-using the coaxial socket for optical - but it is indeed still optical.

Good luck getting warranty from PLE. At least PCCG are reliable, and $150 for a GREAT sound card is cheap already.
