I'd leave the intake pipe installed. It'll help with getting cold air into the guard (as opposed to drawing in hot air from the engine bay)

Get an aftermarket panel filter in there once you remove the resonator. K&N are popular (provided that you don't over oil them) but I'd go for a dry filter like an Apexi.

I left the intake pipe attached and also bought a short piece of pvc pipe from Bunnings which i fed from the hole in the airbox through to the front guard to help draw some air in.

So you basically replaced the resonator with the straight through pvc pipe yes?

I did manage to pick up one of those apexi dry filters from Vision R while they were on sale too.

If you buy a cover plate it doesnt suck air from the engine bay...i got one and i think its out of an outback and fits the hole perfectly

Yep pretty much...the PVC pipe is pretty short, probably 3 - 4 inches long, just basically enough to poke into the guard and then i fitted a flared piece to the end to help direct air into the pipe (Don't know if it actually helps but it's good in theory )

That's kinda what I was thinking in my earlier posts. What you have done there makes sense to me. I don't know how dirty the air is under that guard, but I would have thought it better to force in fresh air from the front intake

I just used the resonator bottle to make my join so the Air bypasses the Guard.

See this thread from where i got the idea from.
