Well my bad luck continues it seems.. Drove the car on saturday parked it for about an hr or so. Jumped back in and turned the ignition which was followed by a massive explosion, smoke was then pouring out of the engine.

Opened the bonnent to see that the back of my manifold had blown off from the welds and the bottom of the manifold had done the same..

Im unsure what has happened and why? Can anyone shed any light on it? Looks as if there was fuel trapped somewhere??

I also not sure if ill switch to a stocky cast manifold, fix this one or go with another design..

here some pics:

Looks like its just a shitty fillet weld holding the plates together. Looks ok from the outside but will be weak as fuck if not fitted up correctly... Leading you to your problem now.

Bummer. I'd go back to stocker myself. If fixing it make sure there is a proper fit up and weld penetration for strength.

Looks like any one can make a manifold these days. as long as its looks alright, she'll be right. go stock or get a decent one.

I remember a similar thing happening to the UWAM dyno motor when I was at uni. We were tuning the race motor and at about 2am we decided to turn it off and get some pies from the local servo. 30 minutes later we came back, turned the ignition on and BANG!! It was an impressive fireball and the only thing that stopped it from flying off and hitting the roof was all the sensor wires.

That manifold was made from carbon fibre and managed to stay together, but only because it blew off from the rubber joiners to the motor (Subaru manifold is bolted down and isn't going anywhere).

We could only guess at what caused it, but after looking at the inlet ports on the motor, you could see small pools of fuel sitting in there. So we just assumed that this fuel must have evaporated from the already hot engine into the manifold and as soon as we turned the ignition on, there must have been a spark inside to ignite this mixture. The resultant pressure build up inside the manifold had no where to go because the throttle is closed, so off goes the manifold from the joiners.

I guess the lesson we learnt from that was to make sure the manifold was earthed really well and it never happened again.

You should weld it up good but fit a small burst plate on the manifold at the top. That way the thin burst plate will explode outwards if any fuel ignites in future without damaging anything else.

If you look at drag v8's they sometimes have this burst plate on the manifold under the whipple charger.
