Default Loud knocking sound on MY99 (WITH VIDEO)

Hey guys my MY99 started making a very loud knocking sound after a long drive.

The engine ran fine before and it only started making the noise about 200m from my destination. The car is stock except for a CBE and BOV. 153km on the clock.

Sounds like piston knock? Probably due to big end bearing problem???

Has anyone had a similar problem? Is there any chance it can be something that doesn't involve a rebuild? (ie valve...)

Thanks guys any help would be appreciated.

PROBLEM NOW FIXED - WAS CAUSED BY A BIG END BEARING FAILURE ON CYLINDER 3

buy a new ej207 short block.

It will probably be cheaper to do that than a rebuild of your current block, and you'll have all the goodness of a OEM forged motor. Good shit.

if you're not after making huge power, buy a second hand long motor and sell the parts that are still good on yours off, ie heads and stuff.

if you're thinking stuff it, its gone bang, might as well build a tough motor, you can buy a brand new ej207 short block for about 3200-3500. the 207 is a semi closed deck block which is stronger and has forged con rods and pistons., everything else from your motor like heads will bolt straight on (providing they arent rooted). but they're more than likely still good.

yeah as said, i had a similar problem with my old engine, two big ends went, pistons/rods/crank/block ended up all unusable, ended up getting a 2nd hand block and throwing my heads on (lucky they weren't damaged). Basically you are looking at

5k +- for 2nd hand ej205 in there
7k +- for brand new ej207 in there

Add 2k if your heads are damaged.

Thats the sound of death....sounds like a fairly severe knock, I'd say it would need a decent amount of machining to get the crank right again.

Better off getting a new short motor.

P.S. Good work on the video...THAT is how you get a problem diagnosed on a forum, rather than saying "my engine is making a noise, what's wrong with it?"

I don't hahaha. Still hoping that by some sorta miracle it's only a minor problem... not gonna happen!
