Yeah, tossers. Why can't we have someone from PWRX who works at Subaru and can actually HELP US OUT with this kinda stuff.

Probably want a few hundred to install it too - Takes 2 seconds to unplug and swap.

Honestly though, is the AFM techinical/complex enough of a component to warrant such a high price tag, or are we talking about a $500+ markup on this seemingly "china-spec" device anyways.

its one of the most essential components on your engine. Ring around (ring regents) - get the best price, bite the bullet and buy it.

RichX 08-01-2009 03:01 PM

Would rather confirm it's definitely the AFM before putting close to a g-banger down, for a part which potentially i may not be able to take back. I understand how crucial it is .. :)

borrow someones working afm and go for a drive...

RichX 08-01-2009 08:04 PM

Here is what mine looks like. I have checked all the wires which go in and they seem pretty firm.

I did a test, while the engine was idling, pull off the AFM to see if it stalls - to confirm that the ECU was reading from it and it almost stalled and corrected. Threw a CEL. So i know it's reading to some degree.

I figure if it was a dodgy connection it would CEL while driving.

Here is what it looks like:

Mate, you can certainly borrow my AFM, but its from a 99 GC8, so not sure it would suit.

Steve.

Elrico 08-01-2009 09:31 PM

Im pretty sure its a different AFM. 99/00 GC8's had a different AFM to the rest and were more prone to failure, especially when oil was applied to a pod thus the reason you can buy a gc8 afm for about $200.

Mate I'm happy to get you one at my cost, I buy direct from Subaru Parts WA (Amcap) and pay dealer cost....... I think I mentioned that to you before but can't remember the price though?!?

Pm me once you've done the test run with someone elses AFM if all goes well.

I just did Fob's a set of brakes and a Gc8 AFM at my cost (Pm him about it if you like).

P.s China spec are the no brand $500 01 -> on afms kicking around....Not the Subaru genuine ones.

I'm happy to help where/ when I can. (gotta share the love!)

Cheers Ross .. Ultimately it'd be good to get yourself, and another AFM which is working and do some logging. If I can get yourself and someone else to help out, I'll give you a bottle of bourbon or a case of beer as well.

Just want to be sure it's the AFM before i put down coin on a new one.

RichX 10-01-2009 04:32 PM

So today i went and tried a different AFM from Russ, top bloke, and tested it out under full boost. Problem still there .. :( On the bright side though i may have eliminated an expensive part i'd have to buy.

Something i noticed before, which i am now paying more attention to having elimnated the AFM is pictured below

This is clearly water marks from my waterspray. Not sure how it's getting there, can't see a leak, but it is .. And i think it's leaking onto the electronics on the throttle body ..

Pulled off the plugs from here today and while they had been getting a little wet, there was no water inside the connectors or anything. I am going to get new spark plugs fitted soon as well.

What do you think ..
