Default GD series remote boot release using factory key. Gauging interest on DIY kit.

G-day,

Ever since my WRX got broken into through the boot lock, hence having the hole welded up when it was repaired, I've been trying to work out a way to implement a remote boot release on the car using the factory key. I don't like the idea of having a extra push button keyfob on my keys if its not necessary (pedantic I know!).

I think I've just about sorted it out, just waiting on some components to arrive. Once I have all the bugs sorted out I'll be able to give a definite price, but it'll probably be around the $250 - $300 mark which would include:

- all electrical components and wiring
- a detailed install guide, specifically for an MY06 Impreza but I'm sure it could be easily installed into any GD model (I doubt that the wiring harness colours are changed).

Currently I have the system set so that if you push the unlock button twice within 4 seconds the boot will open. The system is wired so that when the handbrake is released the boot can't be accidentally opened whilst driving.

So let me know if you're interested, and I'll put in the hard yards to get this to work.

Cheers
MCL

Ah, you read my mind!
I think it's a smashing top mate, especially using the disengaged handbrake as a failsafe measure. I could never quite wrap my head around why Subaru never implemented a remote-boot open on their keys. It has been standard on many lesser value cars for many years now.

Would it possible to have the boot keyhole removed altogether, and operated only via the key?

The thought of added security, and a clean boot lid is very appealing to me

That's the look I'm going for too! Sounds like this would be the safe (and functional) way to achieve it.

I could have sworn I read in my old MY05 manual about multiple open clicks to pop the boot... But that was not optioned on the Aus spec cars.

Maybe worth checking if an OEM solenoid can just be plugged in. Usually the plug is just sitting there waiting for something to go in it...
