Default Relaxing of the mobile phone laws for use in cars

http://www.watoday.com.au/technology...202-1adht.html

Quote:
WA motorists will soon be allowed to make and receive phone calls without a bluetooth device and look at map apps while driving under the changes to come into effect on March 1.
This should be good, but probably should mirror the laws they already have in VIC for some consistency...

Can't believe it, it's worse with more ambiguity. Rob you have reinforced your stupidity!

Taking a phone call is fine but pressing "skip track" is illegal?

"Dedicated" GPS in the "middle of the windscreen" (WHY people put them in the middle?") you can touch "whilst" driving?

Oh seriously ...

Knob Johnson has been told by Barney not to create any more issues and try to make the people like him more before the next election. He thinks this is progress LOL

I always knew WA was backwards compared to other states but this take the icing on the cake.

"Under the new legislation it would be legal to use smartphone GPS functionalities, as long as the phone was in a fixed holder and the driver did not have to touch the phone, Mr Johnson said

Under the new legislation it would be legal to use smartphone GPS functionalities, as long as the phone was in a fixed holder and the driver did not have to touch the phone, Mr Johnson said

That meant drivers could enter directions before taking off, but they were not allowed to enter any changes to the route once driving.

But drivers were still allowed to use the full functionalities of dedicated navigation systems such as Tom Toms by touching the devices, Mrs Fyfe said."

How is using a smartphone in a holder different to a dedicated Nav system ?

Where is the legal definition of a cradle and cradle mounting positions for all cars?

Well, that's an interesting one there. By law you are not supposed to add anything to your windscreen which may interfere with driver's vision, such as dash mounted gauges which sit higher than the bonnet in field of view. The exception is the top 10% of the windscreen area, but most ppl including myself would mount them much lower.

As for Johnson, he is just an embarrassment. Up to the early 80's, the police ministry was one of the most senior of cabinet portfolios, but sadly it has since slipped down to being one of the most junior, hence we just get one clown after another .

^^ Yeah that's my point. How many stories do you hear of people with radar detectors being fined for having something stuck the windscreen.

Now you can legally stick you phone right in the middle of your view.

Fuck it. I'm getting a cradle for the iPad and smacking that right in the middle. Epic safe!

LOL - news reports say the Police aren't even going to try an enforce this "new version" as it's more ambiguous then the last rules.

FAIL Rob FAIL!

Liberal party stalwarts who I get to bend the ear of think it's time for you to "gracefully retire".
