Default Track car

OK, so some of you may know that I recently sold my MY07 STi and bought an HSV Grange for family duties. For what it is the Grange is superb. Supreme comfort and some great go from the big 6.2L V8. Looks great too. Little bloke is loving the DVD in the headrests

Now that the family car has been taken care of I can start to research what 'track' car I can get. It's going to be a Rex or an Evo. Leaning more towards a 99/00 Rex and dropping a 6 speed and better motor into it. My theory is that the 99/00 Rex is cheap and light and with a 6 speed and better donk will be a great car for the track.

Or should just I get an 05 Sti or EVO 7/8/9 and have the 6 speed and donk etc all done, though in a heavier car??

Any thoughts?

Cheers
Dom

All things being equal the newer car 'should', have less wear and tear on it, saving you on maintenance costs.

If you're not doing the work yourself you're going to have to factor labour in, plus sourcing the parts, and ultimately ending up with a car that will be of a lessor value then a newer version.

Guess it depends if you want to spend the money now or later.

What track work are you wanting to do?

Actual competition or just some no limits nights?

Depends how much you want to spend but I'd go Evo 6, 6.5, 7 or 9RS.

Dom, you need to define "track car" clearly in your mind.

For example, if you're thinking "caged etc", the best thing is to buy something already done....doing it yourself can be less cost effective...

I'm a complete track hack so it wouldn't be competitive stuff. Just what the WRX Club and PWRX have on offer. Basically something to put a smile on your dial out on the track and something you can tinker with without having to consider carrying the missuss and kids in.

It also has to be OK for the road, dont want a track ONLY car.

Probably budget $20k - $25k all up??
