Default 2.5 RS Muffler Query

Hey,

My current car is an Impreza '02 2.5RS, completely stock. I was wondering what would be a good cannon (everybody rolls eyes) as some I've heard are good with 2.25" inlets or possibly another type of muffler that I can get for cheap?

Cheers

I'd be looking at an oval muffler, like a Magnaflow or similar. Running one on my 2.0L N/A GC8 with 2" ID piping from the cat back and 1 resonator, and it's got plenty of volume, still burbles and pops when you want it to, and gives quite a nice note (not a true WRX rumble, but not a tinny ricer sound either).

Had a cannon on mine, but it was a pain on long trips - it'd echo through the entire car if you sat on anything over 2.2k RPM. The Magnaflow isn't anywhere near as bad for this - 2k rpm and you don't hear much at all until you plant it/back off the power.

If you're chasing the rumble as well, you'll probably need a set of aftermarket headers - a few pop up on Ebay now and then, should suit regardless if they say 2.0L or 2.5L.

I was looking at those, pretty pricey but I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. I'm going to purchase some UEL headers later on just chasing a muffler first.

Any other brands that could possibly be an alternative?

Thanks btw

Most of the good quality ones are going to be about the same price new unfortunately. Varex ones are good but they aren't going to be much cheaper.

If you're willing to go second hand, you can usually find a decent muffler with all the piping etc for $100-$150 for the diff back, which is at least a start.

I wouldnt bother about headers on your RS. You will lose power, and they will cost you a minimum of 600/700 bucks. Just spend a couple of hundred on the muffler and be done

When i had my RS. I had 3inch diff back cannon.

Had the rumble, loud as fuck though.
Got a custom system made from cat back.
2.5" from cat to hot dog muffler.
2.1/4 from hot dog to superturbo muffler (oval muffler) finished in 2.5" tip.

Improved performance. Sounded awesome. Only cost $300.
Dont bother with much else as i tried. A mildly worked 2.5 N/A will get trumped by a wrx in a straight line.

Get some driver training classes, handle what youve got now. Then throw another 150hp at it in a wrx.

Yeah, i'm not too worried about performance as it is my first car. Mostly going for the sound as sad as it is. In response to the statement above yours, I've heard n/a's that sound the same as WRX's..
