Default Engine swap + gear box swap

If i buy a 2002 sti engine to put into my GC8, will i have to buy a 2002 sti gearbox to go with it? will the car need a tune after having all this work done to it, or is it a straight swap?.
what risks will i run putting a new engine and gearbox into a gc8?
Im looking to do this at the endd of january next year, thanks

I would get the 6 speed(stronger than your junk 5 speed) aswell but having said that you need the same ratio rear diff, 6 speed tail shaft( or auto tail shaft) and hubs and half shafts. Being a gc8 you will need to use your standard intake manifold as 02 STI has coil on plug as apposed to leads. If you get a half cut any subaru work shop ex all star, maximum motor sport or stechnic will be able to wire it all up and get it running. Yes a tune would be recommended

2002 STi engine in a GC8 will need a loom rework as the engine uses completely different cam angle sensors for the active valve control system. It's definately not a DIY kind of thing.

Ive been looking at written off sti's and doing exactly the half cut idea, So basiclly, yes i would have to take it in to get a retune done on it, is there anything i should consider doing to the engine before having it put into my gc8, its a year 2000 GC8.
I was also looking at putting either a vf34 or vf 24 on it

You would NOT need a retune if you direct fitted the engine, because to make it work you will need the ecu, and a total rewire.

Tune isnt the issue, the rewire is. Cheaper to sell GC8 and buy 02 sti.
wrxwgn and MY00GC8 like this.

I don't disagree that the rewiring is a head fuck, but it's not completely out of the realms of a DIY job. I made new looms over the course of a few days on my kitchen table. I did however get an aftermarket ECU, so pinned the looms to suit that, so maybe that made it an easier job. It certainly helps having a bit of a mechanical (possibly the wrong word) mind for it though.

yeah i know but i dont want to go buying other peoples problems as sily as that sounds, i want to build it and i do have the money laying around to do it after being paid out.
and i am struggling to find a 6 speed gear box, my mechanic has agreed to help me with the rewiring as he has done something similar to this.
Whats the next best thing to a 6 speed, is there any 5 speed worthy of putting in? also.. anybody know anyone whos selling a written off wrx.. not fussed on the year.

If you don't want to buy someone else's problems then why are you buying a halfcut instead of building a motor from scratch?
